Chapter Fifty: Lines Begin
The house woke wrong.
Not loud—not yet—but wrong in the way sound carried. Steps lingered too long against the floorboards, claws clicking and echoing as if the space had grown larger overnight. Even the air felt divided, warm in some corners, thin and watchful in others.
Jordan moved first.
He took the stairs without hesitation, his weight steady, deliberate—each step a quiet claim. Joshua followed in a scatter of noise, claws striking wood too fast, too eager, his voice sharp with something that wasn’t quite confidence.
Behind them, the stair waited.
Below, the bowls gathered attention like gravity. Cats drifted closer in ones and twos, not rushing, not quite willing to be first. The scent of food lingered, but it wasn’t hunger that held them there—it was the question of who would stand, and who would move.
Peanut crossed the room without breaking stride.
She did not look left or right. The space adjusted around her in small ways—tails lifting, bodies shifting just enough to let her pass. When she reached the dish, she lowered her head and ate, the sound of each crunch carrying farther than it should.
Jynx slid in at her side, close enough to touch.
“She stays,” she murmured, the words soft but placed where they could not be ignored.
Across the room, Olive’s ears flicked back. Paula remained near the pantry, still as a shadow pinned to the wall, her eyes tracking every shift, every inch taken and not given.
No one moved to challenge it.
Not yet.
Above them, the rail held a single shadow.
Zephyr crouched in silence, watching.
And the house—
waited.
